I’ve had two reflux babies. One struggled with weight gain and hovered close to the fifth percentile for a while. If you’ve lived this, you know how consuming reflux can feel. The constant spit up. The outfit changes (hello, laundry). The anxiety around feeds. The absolute exhaustion that hits hardest in the.middle of the night.
As a reflux mom, you’re probably no stranger to spit up. Anything can be a burp cloth if you believe hard enough. People might point it out on your clothes, and you just keep going about your day because there’s no point in changing again.
Reflux can make you feel like you’re always on high alert, especially when you’re trying to balance comfort, safety, and your own need for rest. There are so many opinions and suggestions, and when you’re exhausted, it can feel overwhelming to sort through what actually helps.
This post doesn’t share a cure for reflux (although I wish it did). For many babies, reflux is something they simply have to outgrow, even though in the moment it feels like that day will never come. What this is instead is a collection of things that helped us live with reflux a little more comfortably and safely, while we waited for it to pass.
And it does pass. Slowly, and often without much warning, the spit up eases. One day you realize you’ve gone hours without dashing for a burp cloth. If you’re in the thick of it right now, I promise that day is coming.
What Helped Us Live With Reflux
Burp cloths are a true essential (and you need more than you think)
If you are dealing with reflux, burp cloths are not optional. They are a true essential, and you will need far more of them than you expect. I stopped trying to make a small stack work very quickly.
I keep burp cloths everywhere because spit up happens constantly and without warning. On the couch. By the bed. In the diaper bag. In the car. Having one within reach matters more than what it looks like.
The cute little burp cloths with fun patterns never really cut it for me. What mattered was that they were soft, absorbent, and large enough to actually do their job. The Comfy Cubs muslin burp cloths work well for us because they hold up to frequent washing and absorbed spit up instead of just spreading it around. They even stored well for two years. I have multiple packs and still use them daily.
Bibs to cut down on constant outfit changes
Burp cloths help, but bibs were what really reduce how often I was change my baby’s clothes. On rougher reflux days, swapping a bib can feel so much more manageable than changing an entire outfit.
I use the Konssy bibs constantly. They are soft, absorbent, and gentle on my baby’s neck. They definitely do not stop reflux, but they make our days feel a little easier.
A safe place to set your baby down during the day
During the day, I need somewhere I can safely set my baby down while they stay upright and supervised. I’ve found that on the lowest setting, the Baby Delight bouncer allows my baby to sit slightly propped up without putting pressure on their belly.
It gives my arms a break and lets me care for my toddler (or take a shower after feeds) while still feeling like a safe choice for minimizing spit up.
Nighttime reality and choosing the safest option when you are exhausted
Nighttime reflux is harder. You are tired. Your baby is uncomfortable. Sometimes you just need to set your baby down somewhere safe, even if there is a chance they will spit up a little.
For me, holding my baby upright for ten or so minutes and then setting them down in their bassinet feels much safer than fighting through thirty minutes and risking falling asleep while holding my baby in an unsafe situation. I focus on following safe sleep guidelines, keeping the sleep space clear, and preparing for spit up rather than trying to prevent it entirely.
I also learned a gentler way to lay my reflux baby down by placing their bottom down first and their head last. This is something worth researching from trusted pediatric sources and discussing with your child’s doctor.
Probiotic and vitamin D drops
I cannot say for sure how much these BioGaia Protectis Baby Probiotic Drops helped, but I do think they make my baby more comfortable overall. Reflux is rarely caused by one single thing, and this felt like a gentle support rather than a fix.
Pack more clothes than you think you need
Reflux taught me to overpack. Extra sleepers. Extra onesies. Extra everything. Better to be safe than sorry!
A reminder I needed to hear
One day, the spit up slows down. You realize you have not changed an outfit in hours. Reflux does not last forever, even though it feels endless when you are in it.
Always talk to your pediatrician about reflux concerns and treatment strategies, especially if weight gain is an issue. None of this is medical advice or a cure, but is simply what helped us manage reflux safely and with a little more sanity.
